Configuring Indexing Service
It is actually quite easy to set up indexing service to index the content on your local machine and network file servers. Please bare in mind though that while it is normally ok to do this for a couple of machines any more than that can put significant load on any network resources you are indexing.

First you need to set up a catalog and then add directories to it.

Setting up a catalog.

1) Right click on your "My Computer" icon and click on "Manage"

2) Expand out "Services and Applications" and then expand out "Indexing service".

3) Right click on "indexing service", click on "New" then click on "Catalog"

4) Enter the name you would like to give your catalog and then specify where you would like the catalog to be stored. Click "OK"

5) Right Click on "indexing service" and click on "Stop". Wait a few minutes then right click on "indexing service" again and click on "Start"

Congratulations you have now added a catalog!

Adding Directories..

Now you need to tell indexing service what locations it should index as part of the new catalog.

1) Expand out your new catalog and right click on "Directories"

2) Click on "New" and then "Directory"

3) Click on "Browse" and choose the location you would like to index. All sub folders and files under that location will be indexed. It is best to go via network neighbourhood if adding network content and enter the path as a UNC path (\\server1\share) instead of relying on mapped drives.

4) Then if needed enter the username and password that indexing service should use to index the location you have specified. If it is a network resource on a Windows based server you want to index you will need to append your domain to the front of your username e.g. MyDomain\Username for the username.

Click on "Ok" and then stop and restart indexing service once more.

After indexing service has built its catalog of the content in the locations you specified you'll be able to search those locations allot quicker when you right click on them in windows explorer and click search.

Of course this is nothing compared to what CI Search can do with indexing service.
